Working Season is an ongoing project that documents the experience for 20,000 Mexican nationals living and working on farms across North Carolina on H-2A Temporary Work Visas and the impact their temporary presence has on their surrounding communities – both in rural North Carolina and Mexico. The program allows individuals from Mexico and a handful of other countries to work for American farms up to 10 months a year. In North Carolina, which had the fourth highest number of H-2A visa holders in 2022, workers primarily harvest tobacco, sweet potatoes and Christmas Trees, among a variety of other crops.
